I got an email today. Here is a line from it:
These ideas don't come out of nowhere -- they're planted and spread via talk radio, the blogosphere and the entire right-wing media echo chamber ...
In the current election, partisans on both sides of the divide views blogs as key links in the media chain. Blogs are considered to be sources for extreme, often malicious, accusations, falsities that, once in circulation, are difficult to eliminate.
How can such a claim be studied? What would the step be in identifying and tracing such claims? I encourage those who want to focus on campaigns to think about this question, and begin looking at the resources collected here (and elsewhere) to formulate a research plan. If you are going to study this election, you will need to formulate this plan quickly. Note: internet research have done work on digital methods. The Digital Methods Initiative included in the resources as well as some of the chapters in the Boler book can be very helpful on this.

This is completely true. When people want to make up things they do. I was watching on the news about this hick of a guy from I don't know where who was interviewed about Sarah Palin's book banning and he blantantly admitted that he had just made that rumor up and put it on a blog. Palin never tried to ban any books from the libraries in Alaska but alot of the people that had heard the original story never heard that it was false so it is hard to tell what is true and what is not.

It's important to think about one can study this. Just because a blogger makes up something, doesn't mean that people will or have to believe it. How do rumors circulate? And how do some rumors get into the mainstream media?
You can approach the problem from the other side. If you are trying to market a product or get a candidate elected, how do you move an idea from one blog out into the msm?
this is all true, but should we resort to such vindictive and childish tactics for a marketing strategy?
what tactics are vindictive and childish?
