The general theme of the contributions to Rebooting America is that networked communications technologies can enhance citizen involvement. Many chapters urge that new technologies enable everyone to participate any time they want. People with computers and cell phones can change the world from the bottom up! To be sure, some of the writers are skeptical. Clay Shirky, for example, thinks new media are better at stopping things than starting things.
What does your experience of trying to identify and solve a problem while working together in a group tell you? Do your experiences confirm the claims of the authors?

Yes citizen involvement is important and network communications does enhance it. However I don't know if becoming involved online is really a true demonstration of citizen involvement. Reflecting back upon the group work we did yesterday... Were we some how actively contributing to this theme?
involvement makes groups work. I agree that new technologies enable everyone to participate any time they want. But i too am skeptical. Face to face interaction is an important aspect of citizen involvement, and I personally do not want that to ever disappear. Granted, certain involvement might be easier if face to face interaction was eliminated and replaced by new technology practices, but is easy always better? Technology can enhance citizen involvement, but technology shouldnt be the deciding factor of personal citizen involvemnt. People should want to get involved because they care about an issue, not because it's easier now to get involved. If we continue to simplify our lives by trading the personal for the impersonal, what is to become of us? aRE WE ttaking the easy way out?

I agree that face to face involvement is key. This brings us back to our initial readings and first day of class. Technology has no doubt reached the point where it is the easy way out.
